HyperPresent is a fictitious film festival that contains the work of Mati Diop and Ava DuVernay. This project was a way for me to combine my interests in design and afrofuturism.

The film festival's references a theme found in both director’s films, where time doesn't follow the typical western structure of past, present, and future; instead, it seems to be simultaneous. Ancestors speak through their descendants, and the past merges with the future in an supernatural way.

Diop and DuVernay use this concept as a lens with which to examine the experiences of the black diaspora.

The brand identity for this festival features warped and stretched imagery, floating in space. This treatment was chosen to convey the idea of simultaneity and connection across generations.
The main typeface is a modified version of Hyper Scrypt by Jérémy Landes. Hyper Scrypt is originally a reverse-stencil typeface inspired by stained glass. To make the type more approachable, the letters were inversed and rounded on the edges. This helped the wordmark feel both dated and futuristic.
The portraits of children come from Gordon Parks, a mid-century Black photographer. He was a pioneer for black portraiture, and shows his subjects with beauty and power. By printing, scanning, and stretching his images, I could communicate the concept of time warping.
